Sneaker reissues have been cropping up now for quite a while, often sparking little more than slight interest and a unanimous “not another one” sigh. But sometimes a release comes along that makes us turn our heads and ask, “How did we never notice this one from the archives?” 2014 has already seen its fair share of reissues, specifically in OG colorways, cementing the fact that retro runners have definitely made a comeback, with the mantra being, “the louder the better.” With a lot of recent releases dating back to the early ’90s, silhouettes have become clunkier, colors bolder and styles mismatched. Whatever rules you thought were in place, they’ve been thrown out the window in favor of statement trainers that are sometimes so ugly, they’re fascinating. Raf Simons, we have you to thank for that. We’ve scoured the year’s releases so far and come up with a compilation of the best reissues to look out for in 2014. Of course, the big guns are also making their comebacks – adidas with the Stan Smith and Nike’s Air Force 1 models, but these have seen their fair share of re-releases over the years, so we’ve chosen to focus in on the less obvious ones. These sneakers have hit hard coming out of the archives, cementing their place in the year’s best sneaker lists already. Reebok Insta Pump Fury It’s not surprising that Reebok‘s now-ubiquitous Insta Pump Fury silhouette kicks things off. First released in 1994, the Insta Pump Fury came onto the scene as a performance runner whose design looked to the future. 20 years on it looks just as modern, thanks to Reebok’s pump technology which took away the need for laces. In celebration of its anniversary, Reebok released the sneaker’s OG Black/Hypergreen/Red colorway at the start of the year and will roll out 27 collaborations over the course of Spring/Summer 2014, the first of which we’ve started seeing. The return of the Insta Pump Fury is nothing but proof that sneakers have slowly started relaxing their silhouettes and taking on a clunkier shape. Whether you love them or hate them, these are definitely one of the big reissues 2014 has to offer. The classic running sneaker incorporated innovative TORSION technology and shock-absorbing Impact Cell at the heel when it was first released over 20 years ago. The silhouette still holds up today, featuring the style’s distinctive wraparound tongue and three-stripe logo which reaches from the upper to the outsole. It’s first reissue included the OG White/Green/Grey colorway and a number of other clean combinations have followed since. The release is definitely one of adidas’ biggest contenders for the year, having created a much talked about buzz since January. With an advertising campaign that dared the wearer to “take the longest, cruelest way home possible,” it was designed for runners who thought nothing of clocking 75 – 100 miles per week. Its star moment came in 1985 when its OG Royal Blue/Yellow colorway featured in teen hit The Breakfast Club on the feet of geek Brian. Over 30 years since it’s debut, Nike kicked off 2014 by reissuing the sneaker in nothing short of 11 colorways, including the OG version. A slightly more robust take on Nike’s classic running models, the Internationalist is proving to be on-trend for the year’s somewhat chunkier running silhouettes. With such a strong release so far, expect more colorways to join the lineup later in the year. You can purchase them here. Nike Air Tech Challenge II Andre Agassi’s famed tennis shoe was originally released in 1989 and has already been reissued in its OG Hot Lava colorway, as well as a number of vintage-inspired colorways. An update on his ’87 Air Tech Trainer 1, the second iteration was released alongside an apparel line that confirmed Agassi’s reign on the court during those days. Its retro high-top silhouette holds up pretty well today, somewhat unsurprisingly when you take into account that the Yeezy 2 mimicked the mid- and outsole design. Whether Nike has re-released the sneaker as repentance for the Yeezy 2 we’ll never know, but regardless the Air Tech Challenge II is making a comeback in 2014. Order yours here. Image: Kith NYC PUMA Trinomic XT2 Plus PUMA‘s take on the retro runner trend is in the form of the Trinomic XT2 Plus, which first landed in 1991. After sneaking in early with a one-to-one reissue in its OG Silver/Green/Yellow colorway late last year, the German sportswear giant has since released the premium “Crafted Pack” in suede and leather, and a lineup of bright colorways for the upcoming Spring/Summer 2014 season. Utilizing the brand’s Trinomic cushioning system, the silhouette has undoubtedly been a more popular reissue than the Disc Blaze, which continues to divide opinion. The sneaker’s versatility has been shown through the various designs we’ve already been treated to, and with the success they’ve had, we’re sure more colorways aren’t too far off.
